Who Do We Publish?

Rusted Radishes accepts submissions from anyone who has a relationship with the Arab world (or, “Arab-adjacent), whether you are from there, in the diaspora, have traveled or worked there, or have some other tangible connection. Ultimately, our mission is to create and support a space for these writers and artists. In addition to our seasoned authors, artists, and translators, many of our contributors have been published for the first time by Rusted Radishes. Our mission is to bring their work into the spotlight. This mission is parallel to publishing previously unpublished work — to continually share new work to a larger audience.

Rusted Radishes is affiliated with the American University of Beirut’s Department of English and is supported by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC).

تستقبل فَمْ: مجلة بيروت الأدبية والفنية نصوصاً ومساهماتٍ لكاتبات وكتّاب تربطهم بلبنان أو منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا علاقة من خلال السكن أو العمل أو الاهتمامات الأخرى. تهدف مجلّتنا إلى خلق مساحة للكتّاب والفنانين، لتسليط الضوء على أعمالهم وجعلها متاحةً للجمهور الواسع، سواء بالنسبة لكتّابنا ومترجمينا وفنّانينا المخضرمين، أو للعدد الأكبر من كتّابنا الذين ينشرون للمرّة الأولى. 

تصدر فَمْ عن قسم اللغة الإنكليزية بالجامعة الأميركية في بيروت بدعم من كلية الآداب والعلوم وكلية مارون سمعان للهندسة والعمارة. وقد تمكّنّا، بدعم سخيّ من مركز الفنون والعلوم الإنسانية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، من إطلاق مجلتنا رقميّاً! وسيتيح لنا ذلك نشر مقالات بشكلٍ دوريّ على موقعنا،  في الوقت نفسه الذي نراجع فيه المساهمات المعدّة للنشر في المجلة المطبوعة. 

General Submission Guidelines

Rusted Radishes is a bilingual journal (Arabic and English) published in print annually. The call for submissions for our print edition is announced on social media channels and on this website. All submissions for this call will be considered for print and online publication. To submit, see our Submittable portal for open calls.

We accept rolling submissions to be published on our Webzine at www.rustedradishes.com. Please send web-only submissions to submit@rimarantisi.com according to the guidelines below.

If you have questions, please send an e-mail to info@rimarantisi.com. Any work submitted not in line with these guidelines will not be accepted, nor read.

Attachment: Each writing piece should be attached in a separate document in .doc form. Each art piece should be sent as a low-res attachment.

Bio: Please provide a brief bio written in 3rd person that does not exceed 80 words. Please indicate whether you are a student, faculty or alum of AUB; and/or your connection to Lebanon or the region. We reserve the right to edit your bio for syntax and grammatical correctness.

Formatting: Simply use a 12-pt font and double-space each prose piece. Please retain the original aesthetic in your poetry.

Multiple submissions are welcome: But check the guidelines specific to each genre for the maximum allowance.

Name each submission ‘title_genre’: Please include your full name and e-mail address on the top of the first page of the actual submission file.

Simultaneous submissions are welcome: In the case you need to withdraw work, please let us know by writing at submit@rimarantisi.com or through the Submittable submissions manager. For poetry, please leave a note as to which poem you’d like to withdraw.

Genre-specific Guidelines

We accept work in both Arabic and English – please submit your piece to the appropriate genre.

Fiction

We seek high-quality literary fiction, and are happy to read stories with both traditional and experimental forms and subjects. We will consider flash fiction (350-1000 words), short stories (1000-5000 words), and unpublished novel excerpts. Send no more than one long form and one short form story.

Creative Nonfiction

We seek creative nonfiction that is art, not reportage or diary, and that is engaging, honest, and original. The voice should be strong and deliver fresh insights that reach beyond the personal to connect with the universal human experience. All styles and approaches are accepted, be they flash nonfiction, personal essay, literary journalism, or memoir excerpts. Word limit is 5000 words. Send no more than one long form and one short form essay.

Poetry

We seek poetry of all forms. Send up to five poems in one single document.

Translations and Arabic

We accept translations from any language to English and Arabic. Please provide both versions when submitting, including any copyright permissions. The translator is responsible for all author and publisher permissions regarding the source work. Send up to three translations.

Artwork

We welcome submissions of different media including but not limited to painting, illustration, collage, photography, sculpture, installation, textiles, ceramics, and digital media. Non-digital work should be scanned or photographed in high quality digital files. All work should be sent in low resolution, and if accepted will need to be provided in high resolution not exceeding 5 MB in size. Each submission should be attached as .pdf, .eps, .jpeg, or .tiff. You may send up to 5 works.

Graphic Narratives

We accept submissions of Graphic Narratives/Comics or excerpts of unpublished graphic novels. Send up to five.

Pdf, or a series of .jpg images (scans or digital art) at 150 dpi (as submission, then if/when approved, we ask higher resolution). Dimensions (size): preferably Rusted Radishes book ratio/size which is 19.5 cm (W) x 24 cm (L); otherwise A4 is fine. File size: less than 10 MB

Drama

We seek plays (one-acts and full-length pieces, translations, and adaptations) that take advantage of and/or subvert theatrical conventions.

Theater is not television.

Theater is not cinema.

Theater is theater.

A written play alone does not constitute theater; it is only a small part of it. We hold that plays are, by nature, incomplete on the page. With this in mind, our goal is to inspire people to perform the works we publish.

• Translators are responsible for all author and publisher permissions regarding the source work.
• You agree to be added to the Rusted Radishes email lists when you submit to Rusted Radishes. You may unsubscribe from these lists at any time.
• When using the submittable.com submissions program, please be sure to add the Rusted Radishes email address (info@rimarantisi.com) to your spam blocker software so that you can receive correspondence from us.
• Authors retain their copyright.
• Once you have submitted, you can log-in to your submittable.com account and check on the status of your submission at any time during our submission period starting January 1 or thereafter. If it has been longer than six months since you submitted and you have not received a response from us regarding the status of your submission, you may query us at info@rimarantisi.com for an update.

فَمْ مجلة سنوية تصدر باللغتين العربية والإنكليزيّة في شهر كانون الأوّل/ ديسمبر. سننظر في جميع المساهمات وننشر ما نختاره منها في المجلة أو على موقعنا.

الرجاء قراءة التعليمات العامة قبل إرسال مساهماتكم. نعتذر عن عدم مراجعة المساهمات التي لا تتبع التعليمات التالية:

• • المرفقات: على المساهمين تقديم نصوصهم في ملفات (doc.) منفصلة. على جميع الأعمال الفنية أن تسلّم كمرفق منخفض الدقة.
  • السيرة الذاتية: يرجى إرفاق سيرة ذاتية موجزة لا تتجاوز 80 كلمة، وتشرح مدى ارتباطكم بلبنان أو المنطقة. وإن كنتم من طلاب الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت أو خرّيجيها أو موظفّيها، يرجى الإشارة إلى ذلك. نحتفظ بالحق في تحرير سيرتكم الذاتية بما يترافق مع ضرورات النشر. 

• • النسق: استخدام خط 14 نقطة واستخدام مساحة مزدوجة بين السطور للنصوص النثرية. يرجى الاحتفاظ بالنسق الأصلي في الشعر.
  • المشاركات المتعدّدة: نرحّب بها ونرجو من المساهمين التحقّق من التعليمات العامة والخاصة بكل نوع أدبي لمعرفة الحدّ الأقصى المسموح إرساله.

• • تسمية الأعمال: يجب تسمية كلّ مساهمة بـ“عنوانها_نوعها”. الرجاء ذكر اسمكم الكامل وعنوان البريد الإلكتروني في الجزء العلوي من الصفحة الأولى من ملف التقديم.
  • المساهمات المقدّمة إلى أكثر من جهة: نرحّب بها وندعو المساهمين الراغبين في سحب أعمالهم القيام بذلك من خلال موقع Submittable، كما نرجو منهم الإشارة إلى القصيدة التي يرغبون في سحبها.

إرشادات خاصّة بالأنواع الأدبيّة

نستقبل الأعمال باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية- يرجى إرسال مساهماتكم ضمن الأنواع المناسبة الآتية:

القَصَص

نبحث عن أعمال قصصية على أنواعها، فنرحّب بالقصص ذات المنحى التقليدي كما نشجّع الأعمال الأكثر تجريباً من حيث الشكل أو المضمون. نستقبل الأقاصيص والقصص القصيرة جداً (350-1000 كلمة) ومقتطفات من روايات غير منشورة (1000-5000 كلمة). لا يمكن إرسال أكثر من عمل قصصي طويل واحد وعمل قصصي قصير واحد. 

النصوص الإبداعية غير الروائية

على النصوص الإبداعية غير الروائية أن تعنى بالجماليات، أي أن تحاكي الفن وتتميّز عن التحقيقات أو المذكّرات. كما على الأصوات الأدبية أن تتميّز بالجاذبية والصدق والابتكار وأن يكون تأثيرها قويًا وذات  رؤية جديدة تتجاوز التجربة الفردية وتعكس التجربة الإنسانية الكبرى. يمكن إرسال جميع المقاربات والأساليب، سواء أكانت عبارة عن قصة أو مقالة ذاتيّة أو صحافة أدبية أو مقتطفات من مذكّرات. عدد الكلمات هو 5000 كحدّ أقصى. لا يمكن إرسال أكثر من عمل طويل واحد وعمل قصير واحد.

الشعر

نبحث عن الشعر في جميع أشكاله. يمكن إرسال خمس قصائد كحدّ أقصى في وثيقة واحدة.

الترجمات

نستقبل نصوصاً ومساهمات باللغة العربية، كما نستقبل مساهمات مترجمة من أي لغة الى الإنكليزية أو العربية. نرجو منكم تزويدنا بالنصين (الأصلي والمترجم) بالاضافة إلى حقوق النشر. في ما يتعلق بالعمل الأصلي، سيكون المترجِم مسؤولاً عن الحصول على إذن كلٍّ من المؤلف والناشر. يمكنكم إرسال ثلاثة نصوص مترجمة كحد أقصى.

العمل الفني

نرحب بأعمال من مجالات مختلفة، لا سيما الرسم والزخرفة والتصوير الفوتوغرافي والنحت وفن الملصقات والمنسوجات والسيراميك والوسائط الرقمية. يجب تصوير الأعمال غير الرقمية ووضعها في ملفات رقمية عالية الجودة (إرسال جميع الأعمال بدقة منخفضة، وإذا تم قبولها، يتم تقديمها بدقة عالية لا تزيد عن 5 ميغابايت). يجب إرفاق كل ملف على شكل .pdf أو .eps أو .jpeg أو tiff.  بإمكانكم إرسال 5 مساهمات كحدٍ أقصى.

القصص المصوّرة

نستقبل الرسومات والقصص المصوّرة أو مقتطفات من روايات الجرافيك غير المنشورة. يمكن تقديم خمس مساهمات كحدّ أقصى. على المساهمات أن تكون على شكل PDF أو .jpg  بمعدل 150 dpi (سنطلب دقة أعلى في حال قبول الطلب). الأبعاد (الحجم): يفضّل أن يكون متساوياً لحجم كتاب فَمْ: 19.5 سم (العرض) × 24 سم (الطول)؛ وإلا A4. حجم الملف: أقل من 10 MB.

المسرح

 نبحث عن مسرحيات (أعمال من فصل واحد، أعمال كاملة، ترجمات، أعمال مقتبسة) تبني على المسرح التقليدي أو تسائله. 

المسرح ليس التلفزيون.

المسرح ليس السينما.

المسرح هو المسرح.

المسرحية المكتوبة وحدها لا تشكّل مسرحاً ولا يمكن اعتبارها سوى جزء صغير منه. نحن نعتقد أن المسرحيات تبقى غير مكتملة إن لم تعرض، لذلك فإنّ هدفنا هو إلهام الناس لتأدية الأعمال التي ننشرها.

يمكن إرسال مسرحيّتين كحدّ أقصى.

• فيما يتعلق بمصدر العمل، المترجمون مسؤولون عن جميع أذونات المؤلف والناشر.
• عند إرسال المساهمات إلى فَمْ، فإنّكم تأذنون لنا بإضافتكم إلى قوائم البريد الإلكتروني الخاصة بنا. بإمكانكم إلغاء الاشتراك من هذه القوائم في أي وقت.
• عند استخدام برنامج إرسال المشاركات submittable.com ، يرجى التأكّد من إضافة عنوان البريد الإلكتروني (info@rimarantisi.com) إلى برنامج منع البريد العشوائي الخاص بكم حتى تتمكنوا من تلقّي مراسلاتنا.
• يحتفظ المؤلّفون بحقوق النشر الخاصة بهم.
• بمجرد المشاركة، يمكنكم تسجيل الدخول إلى حسابكم على submittable.com والتحقّق من مسار التحرير الذي يبدأ في 1 كانون الثاني/ يناير. إن لم يصلكم ردّ بعد مضيّ ستّة أشهر على تقديم العمل، يمكنكم الاستفسار على :info@rimarantisi.com .
